Economic Concerns
It is important to address every side to the problem of integrating the Syrian asylum seekers into the German economy. The German people and many people around the world have many valid economic concerns when it comes to Germany’s “open door” policy (Germany’s “open door” policy recently been restricted to a quota policy). The best way to solve a problem is by immediately addressing the concerns. People who oppose Germany’s “open door” policy sight entitlements, skill and language barriers, and longevity of the refugee status as some of the main concerns. Germany accepted more than 476,000 asylum applications in 2015 and German officials say more than a million have passed through Germany’s “EASY” system for counting and distributing before they make asylum claims. The European Commission estimates that three million people could arrive by 2017. Accepting all these asylum seekers will cost Germany around 10 billion euros which will be paid by the German taxpayers or Germany will have to sell bonds, which would increase their debt. With Germany recently bailing out Greece for the third time, Germany can ill afford to rack up debt themselves. Along with needing food, water and shelter, these asylum seekers will also need jobs if they are going to successfully integrate into Germany. Many economists are concerned that the asylum seekers do not have the skills required to take the jobs that the jobs that he German economy has available. The majority of the asylum seekers also do not speak German or English, which could make it difficult for them to successfully integrate into the German workforce. The last concern that this paper needs to be addressed is the concern that refugees will not be able to stay long enough to solve Germany’s age problem. Refugees, if granted the refugee status, will be permitted to stay three years before they would have to apply for a permanent residence status. The question arise: Will these refugees apply to stay in Germany or will they go elsewhere?
