Syrian History
History:
Syria has a rich ancient history spanning all the way back to the Neolithic period. As the birthing & battle ground for several other ancient civilizations, Syria was influenced by various cultures. Unfortunately this diverse influence came at the price of constantly being divided among aforementioned civilizations. Syria was often occupied or conquered by foreign powers, from ancient Europe to colonial France. Many famous figures of history have crossed through Syria, including Alexander the Great, Pompey, Saladin, & Timur. Some believe that due to this history, Syria will continue to be influenced by foreign powers. Even to this day, as Syria fights to create an identity, foreign powers around the world are choosing sides in this civil struggle. Civil War History:
In the spring of 2011, the flames of war were sparked when government forces crackdown on protestors. Rebel forces quickly rose in retaliation, but the opposition was deeply divided by religion, ethnicity, and political goals. As conflict escalates between these various groups, the Syrian people have found themselves in the midst of war. As of now, the war has lasted for 5 years with more than 220,000 deaths. Cities have been reduced to ruble, famine is common, and war has ravaged the once beautiful nation of Syria. Humanitarian aid has been severely inhibited by shifting influence of factions. As the future continues to look grim, displaced Syrians have begun fleeing their home country to avoid the effects of war. These refugees have fled to any country that would give them asylum. Many refugees see Europe as their ideal destination for asylum, which is in part due to Europe's social policies. However, as more and more refugees come and issues arise in Europe, several European countries have begun speaking out against the Syrian migration. |
